Expired certificates cause more damage than missing ones, because they arrive without notice. A certificate lapses on a Saturday, the site starts refusing connections, and nobody notices until Monday. Automated renewal removes the problem entirely and is standard on competent plans. Set a calendar reminder anyway, because renewal automation fails silently more often than anybody admits, usually after a domain transfer or a change of payment card.
Update Discipline
Known vulnerabilities in old software account for most compromises of small sites. Attackers scan for version numbers and exploit published flaws, which means the attack requires no skill and no interest in your particular business. Automatic security updates exist because the gap between a patch being released and an owner applying it is where the damage happens.
Page builder add-ons were among the most common entry points during 2025 and 2026, and each one is another piece of code somebody else maintains. A site running 24 add-ons is trusting 24 separate developers to keep patching work they may have abandoned in 2023.
Traffic Floods and Downtime
A distributed denial of service attack floods a site with requests from compromised machines until it stops answering legitimate ones. Cheap plans are attacked constantly because they are easy. The machines running the attack have no interest in the size of the target.
Search crawlers treat repeated timeouts as a quality signal. A site that returns errors when crawled gets crawled less, and pages that cannot be reached over several attempts drop out of the index without any warning label appearing. That failure mode is quieter than a malware flag and harder to diagnose, because nothing in the search result tells the owner anything is wrong.
Browser Warnings After Cleanup
Cleaning the site is not the end of it. Browsers maintain their own lists, and Chrome now runs real-time protection against malicious sites that checks each page against a list refreshed every 30 to 60 minutes.
That system removes a cleaned site quickly once the review clears. The customers are slower.

What to Check Before the Incident
